Pakistan Ecstasy

The work shows portraits from faith adherents of the Sufi saints Lal Shabaz Qalander. The Sufis, are religious followers of the saint Lal Shahbaz Qalander. He was from Azerbaijan and settled in the 13th century in Sehwan Sharif, one of the oldest cities on the Indus river in today’s Pakistan.

Lal Shabaz Qalander, which means as much as “The red hawk”, is said to have preached love, ecstasy and tolerance between religions.

People of all faiths and gender have made pilgrimages to this place to dance in ecstasy on the sounds of the drums. Not only men can be found on the “Dhamal” evening, transgenders and women are dancing in full trance with their hair dangling along their faces.

Once a year Sehwan Sharif transforms into an glittering Festival of ecstasy and spirituality to honor the saint for four days and nights. Hundreds of thousands across the Orient and the subcontinent celebrate in full devotion this event. It reveals a joyful and peaceful face of Islam.
